Ethylene diamine acid phosphate dust

Fine additive dust handled during plastics processing; NIOSH identified it as an irritant and sensitizer in a workplace evaluation.

Airborne form

The form describes what is suspended in air at the point of exposure. A material can produce more than one form, such as dust during handling and fume during heating.

Evidence

In a NIOSH evaluation of a plastics facility, ethylene diamine acid phosphate was frequently added as a flame retardant; NIOSH described ethylene diamine as an irritant and sensitizer associated with dermatitis and asthma and recommended dust controls and respiratory protection where dust is generated.

The second most frequently identified material as causing respiratory symptoms was ethylene diamine acid phosphate. This solid material was frequently added to other plastics being ground as a flame retardant. Although toxicity of this particular solid material is not well documented, ethylene diamine is a well known irritant and sensitizer and has been reported to induce immunologically-mediated dermatitis and asthma.
