Dust entry

Flock-associated dust

Respirable fragments of fiber and finish generated during flock processing and compressed-air cleaning.

Airborne form

The form describes what is suspended in air at the point of exposure. A material can produce more than one form, such as dust during handling and fume during heating.

Evidence

NIOSH found that particles associated with cases of flock workers' lung were present in air samples at a flocking plant, that compressed-air blow-down cleaning and flock-loading produced the highest dust concentrations, and that blow-down cleaning was associated with health effects.

The same types of particles identified at the plant with cases of flock workers' lung ... were also present in air samples collected at Spectro Coating. Blow-down cleaning with compressed air and flock-loading resulted in the highest dust concentrations measured.
