Formula-feed mill dust

Mixed particulate generated during formulation, mixing, conveying, and handling of animal feed in feed mills.

Airborne form

dust

The form describes what is suspended in air at the point of exposure. A material can produce more than one form, such as dust during handling and fume during heating.

Evidence

A NIOSH occupational health study surveyed three Midwestern formula-feed mills and reported that overall dust levels were very high at many operations. Exposures to selected indicator compounds occasionally exceeded recommended threshold limits, although average daily concentrations were generally within suggested limits; because formulations varied, the report cautioned that the indicators might not represent every hazardous component of the environment.
