Present-day grain workers have been reported to exhibit both pulmonary effects (including cough, dyspnea, wheezing, asthma, chronic bronchitis, farmer's lung, chronic airway obstruction, mycotoxicosis, and allergic alveolitis) and nonpulmonary effects (including conjunctivitis, rhinitis, and dermatitis).

NIOSH Publication 86-104 examines fungus spores, bacteria, mites, and insect body parts in respirable grain dust from grain elevators, documenting the biological components of this occupational dust.
