Dust entry

Hops dust

Airborne particulate generated while handling hops in brewing operations.

Airborne form

dust

The form describes what is suspended in air at the point of exposure. A material can produce more than one form, such as dust during handling and fume during heating.

Health effects

Evidence

A NIOSH-indexed experimental study included hops among brewery materials whose dust extracts produced dose-related contractions in isolated guinea-pig tracheal tissue; this is an experimental airway-effect finding and not a workplace disease-rate estimate.

The effect of brewery dust extracts was studied using water-soluble extracts of dust obtained from brewery materials, including hops, barley, and brewery yeast. ... We suggest that brewery dust extracts cause a dose-related airway smooth muscle constriction by nonimmunologic mechanisms.
