Rubber-vulcanization parting-compound dust

Dust from a silica-containing parting compound used during rubber inner-tube vulcanization and mold removal.

Airborne form

dust

The form describes what is suspended in air at the point of exposure. A material can produce more than one form, such as dust during handling and fume during heating.

Health effects

respirable crystalline silica exposurerespiratory hazard concern

Evidence

A NIOSH evaluation of a rubber-vulcanization operation identified potential exposure to dust from a parting compound and reported that the compound contained 7% free silica; NIOSH recommended enclosure, ventilation, and respirators because of the silica content and relatively high airborne particulate levels.

Description · 1
Evaluation of potential exposure to dust from a parting compound ... The use of enclosures, ventilation, and respirators for the vulcanization area is recommended ... the parting compound contains 7% free silica, relatively high levels of airborne particulate matter, and unknown potential hazards of materials produced during vulcanization.
