Elemental silicon powder dust

Airborne particulate from elemental silicon, including amorphous silicon powder.

Airborne form

dust

The form describes what is suspended in air at the point of exposure. A material can produce more than one form, such as dust during handling and fume during heating.

Evidence

The current NIOSH Pocket Guide sets silicon exposure limits at 10 mg/m³ total and 5 mg/m³ respirable, describes black-to-gray crystals or dark-brown amorphous powder, and identifies powder as combustible.

NIOSH REL TWA 10 mg/m³ (total) TWA 5 mg/m³ (resp). Physical Description Black to gray, lustrous, needle-like crystals. The amorphous form is a dark-brown powder. Combustible Solid in powder form.

NIOSH identifies eye, skin, and upper-respiratory irritation and cough as effects associated with elemental silicon particulate exposure, and lists total and respirable exposure limits.
