The NIOSH Pocket Guide describes sodium cyanide as a white granular or crystalline solid and identifies inhalation, skin absorption, ingestion, skin, and eye contact routes; reported effects include irritation, asphyxia, neurologic and gastrointestinal symptoms, slow gasping respiration, and thyroid and blood changes.

Physical Description White, granular or crystalline solid with a faint, almond-like odor. Exposure Routes inhalation, skin absorption, ingestion, skin and/or eye contact. Symptoms irritation eyes, skin; asphyxia; lassitude (weakness, exhaustion), headache, confusion; nausea, vomiting; increased resp rate; slow gasping respiration; thyroid, blood changes. Target Organs Eyes, skin, cardiovascular system, central nervous system, thyroid, blood.
