Sorghum-grain dust

Airborne dust generated during production, handling, and storage of grain sorghum (milo).

Airborne form

dust

The form describes what is suspended in air at the point of exposure. A material can produce more than one form, such as dust during handling and fume during heating.

Evidence

A NIOSH HHE sampled air, grain, and waste materials during grain-sorghum handling at four farms; six area concentrations exceeded the NIOSH REL and ACGIH TLV for total grain dust, and four also exceeded OSHA's PEL.

During harvest, six area concentrations exceeded the NIOSH Recommended Exposure Limit ... for total grain dust. Four of those concentrations also exceeded the Occupational Safety and Health Administration Permissible Exposure Limit for total grain dust.

A NIOSH health-hazard evaluation found potential worker overexposure to grain dust during grain-sorghum production and linked the setting to occupational asthma, bronchitis, organic dust toxic syndrome, and fungal or bacterial bioaerosol concerns.

Abstract · 1
Total grain dust exceeded the NIOSH Recommended Exposure Limit of 4mg/m3 in six areas during harvest. High air levels of endotoxin were identified as well ... The authors conclude that a potential for worker overexposure to grain dusts existed.
