Dust entry

Synthetic graphite dust

Airborne particulate from synthetic graphite produced by high-temperature treatment of carbonaceous materials.

Airborne form

dust

The form describes what is suspended in air at the point of exposure. A material can produce more than one form, such as dust during handling and fume during heating.

Evidence

The NIOSH Pocket Guide lists cough, breathing difficulty, black sputum, decreased pulmonary function, and lung fibrosis among symptoms associated with synthetic graphite exposure, with the respiratory and cardiovascular systems identified as target organs.

Exposure Routes inhalation, skin and/or eye contact. Symptoms Cough, dyspnea (breathing difficulty), black sputum, decreased pulmonary function, lung fibrosis. Target Organs respiratory system, cardiovascular system.

NIOSH notes that reports of graphite-related lung injury did not distinguish natural from synthetic graphite and that quartz silica impurities were involved in many reported cases.

Other reports of lung injury caused by exposure to graphite have not distinguished between the form of the graphite (i.e., natural or synthetic) causing the injury; in addition, exposures to impurities, such as quartz silica, were involved in many of the reported cases.
