Dust entry

Yttrium compound dust

Airborne particulate from yttrium metal and compounds.

Airborne form

dust

The form describes what is suspended in air at the point of exposure. A material can produce more than one form, such as dust during handling and fume during heating.

Evidence

The current NIOSH Pocket Guide sets a 1 mg/m³ time-weighted-average REL for yttrium, describes a dark-gray to black solid, and identifies inhalation, ingestion, and skin or eye contact as exposure routes.

NIOSH REL TWA 1 mg/m³. Physical Description Dark-gray to black, odorless solid. Exposure Routes inhalation, ingestion, skin and/or eye contact.

NIOSH lists a 1 mg/m³ TWA REL and a revised IDLH of 500 mg Y/m³ for yttrium compounds; the IDLH basis states that available data showed no evidence of acute escape-impairing or irreversible effects within 30 minutes.

NIOSH REL: 1 mg/m³ TWA. Revised IDLH: 500 mg Y/m³. The available toxicological data contain no evidence that an acute exposure to a high concentration of yttrium compounds would impede escape or cause any irreversible health effects within 30 minutes.
